RIGHT. WHEN I HEARD THAT THEY WERE GOING TO DO A STUDY TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY CAN DO TO IMPROVE IT, TO POSSIBLY COME UP WITH AN ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION, MY ENGINEER MIND WENT, OH MY GOSH, THIS IS GREAT. YOU KNOW, THEY'RE GONNA COME UP WITH SOME GREAT IDEAS TO GET PEOPLE MOBILIZED IN THE CITY SO THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY ENJOY OUR CITY, GIVE PEOPLE MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO GET THERE. YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT CUTTING OFF THE LEG OF SOMEBODY BASICALLY BY TAKING AWAY A MAIN ARTERIAL ROAD INTO THAT CITY. I'VE BEEN TAKING THAT. I COMMUTED TO UB FROM HERE FOR FOUR YEARS. I WORK IN THE CITY AND I'VE BEEN WORKING DOWNTOWN FOR 11 YEARS. AND I HAVE NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT THAT CITY WOULD LOOK LIKE WITHOUT A SKYWAY. AND I DON'T WANT THAT TO HAPPEN. I NEED THAT SKYWAY THERE BECAUSE I WANNA BE ABLE TO TELL MY NEXT GENERATION THAT GROWS UP HERE THAT YEAH, WE FOUGHT TO KEEP IT BECAUSE WE WANTED TO BE PART OF LARGER COMMUNITY. BUT I DO THINK IT'S, IT'S NOTEWORTHY IN THIS, UH, DAY AND AGE, UM, TO RECOGNIZE THAT OUR TOWN REALLY, UH, IS COMING TOGETHER ON THIS ISSUE. I AM PERSONALLY A COMM, A COMMUTER, UH, THAT TAKES THE SKYWAY AS WELL AS A BUSINESS OWNER THAT HAS A A MY BUSINESS, UH, IS IN THE TOWN OF, OR IS IN THE CITY OF BUFFALO. AND SO I'M VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE SKYWAY AND, UH, THE CLIENT SAID, VISIT ME THE EASE OF THE SKYWAY IN GETTING THEM TO DOWNTOWN BUFFALO, AS WELL AS ALL THE OTHER BUSINESS OWNERS, UH, THAT I'M FAMILIAR WITH, UH, IN OUR DOWNTOWN, UH, CITY REGION. I DID ISSUE A PRESS RELEASE EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON THAT I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE, SINCE SOME OF YOU MAY NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHERE I STAND ON THIS ISSUE. DECISIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE SKYWAY MUST BALANCE THE NEEDS OF CELL TOWN COMMUTERS AGAINST THE REGION'S CONTINUED PROGRESS IN PROVIDING ACCESS TO OUR WATERFRONT. THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION HAS NOT PROPERLY ADDRESSED THE NEEDS OF HAMBURG RESIDENTS WHO RELY ON THE SKYWAY AS A RELIABLE LINK TO THEIR ACTIVITIES IN DOWNTOWN BUFFALO AND POINTS NORTH. THEREFORE, I CANNOT SUPPORT THE REMOVAL OF THE SKYWAY AT THIS TIME. COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE WORKING TO REMOVE HIGHWAYS THAT DECADES AGO DIVIDED NEIGHBORHOODS OR CUT OFF PUBLIC ACCESS TO NATURAL RESOURCES. I SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF [00:10:01] MY FELLOW ELECTED OFFICIALS IN STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WHO ARE SEEKING WAYS TO RIGHT THESE WRONGS LOCALLY. HOWEVER, REMOVAL OF THE SKYWAY SHOULD NOT BE DONE UNLESS AN ACCEPTABLE ALTERNATIVE PLAN IS ALREADY IN PLACE. RESIDENTS AND BUSINESS OWNERS NEED ASSURANCES THAT A WELL THOUGHT OUT TRANSPORTATION PLAN HAS BEEN ACHIEVED WITHOUT A PROPER AND ACCEPTABLE PLAN IN PLACE. THE MANY CONCERNS THAT CURRENTLY EXIST FAR OUTWEIGH THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF REMOVING THE SKYWAY. OKAY. ALRIGHT, WE'LL GO TO BETH FARRELL AND THEN WE'LL GO TO KAREN AND TO MICHAEL. I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH, UM, MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY WHO HAVE PUT IN YEARS ON, ON VARIOUS BOARDS AND COMMITTEES, FIGHTING FOR, UH, REVITALIZATION AND IMPROVEMENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY. AND TO HEAR THEM SPEAK WITH SUCH PASSION ABOUT WHAT THIS WOULD UNDO IN, IN TERMS OF ALL OF THEIR EFFORTS, UH, MEMBERS OF OUR SHORELINE REVITALIZATION COMMITTEE, MEMBERS OF OUR TRAFFIC SAFETY ADVISORY BOARD, MEMBERS OF OUR FIRE COMPANIES, UM, PEOPLE IN EVERY AREA OF OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR VILLAGES BUSINESS OWNERS, IT'S BEEN OVERWHELMING AND THE RESPONSE AND THE SEDIMENT HAS, HAS BEEN THE SAME. UM, I THINK THE WORDS IN MR. CONNOLLY'S PRESS RELEASE SUMMED IT UP VERY WELL. I THINK THAT REPRESENTS WHAT MANY OF US FEEL IN THAT WE ARE OPPOSED TO THIS, ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT THERE'S BEEN NO PRESENTATION OF AN APPROPRIATE ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION. I, I USE THE SKYWAY MYSELF AS A WORKING MOM. IT'S IMPORTANT THAT I HAVE A QUICK COMMUTE SO THAT I CAN SHOW UP TO WORK EVERY DAY. AND THE IDEA OF HAVING TO NAVIGATE AN ALTERNATIVE WITHOUT HAVING AN ADEQUATE ONE PRESENTED IS, IS JUST NOT AN OPTION. BUT IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT ME. IT'S ABOUT ALL THE FAMILIES THAT ARE IMPACTED HAVING TO GET OVER THAT BRIDGE EVERY DAY SO THAT THEY CAN SHOW UP TO THEIR JOBS AND RETURN HOME AND HAVE AN EASY ROUTE HOME. UM, SO I THINK IT'S CLEAR.
